In October, we captured fifteen (15) Caretta caretta, and four (4) Chelonia mydas at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Throughout the month of October the primary barrier net experienced mostly light loads of algae however, moderate to heavy loads of algae began entering into the canal on October 20 threatening the integrity of the net. On October 22 the primary barrier net failed due to system hardware breaking loose from the north concrete piling submerging the north half of the net 2'-5' underwater. The net was inspected the same day by "Underwater Engineering Services, Inc." (UESI) to look for turtles that may have been caught under the net and assess the cause of the failure. Inwater Research Group biologists increased turtle surveillance and capture efforts to include areas west of the primary net. On October 23, the primary net was lowered completely in order to safely inspect and begin removing algae. On October 25, UESI installed large float buoys onto the primary barrier net creating an effective temporary barrier. On October 28, a thorough inspection of the primary net was completed by Florida Power & Light Co. and UESI which included the concrete pilings, hardware, and cables, A permanent fix to the primary net is currently being worked out. Also, UESI started cleaning and repairing the floats on the 8" barrier net which performed as designed and effectively kept turtles from moving further down the canal. Two juvenile loggerheads were hand captured between the primary net and the 8" net on October 29th and 30th. | |||

October 2009 Marine Turtle Intake Canal Captures Attachments: Notes09.xls; October09rep.rtf; St. Lucie caps 2009.xls
Dear Meghan,
Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2009. In October, we captured fifteen (15) Caretta caretta, and four (4) Chelonia mydas at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. On October 13, a sub-adult loggerhead was captured and found to be lethargic and underweight. This event was considered not causal to power plant operation. All other turtles captured in October were released on the same day of capture.
Tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles are attached. Also attached is a spreadsheet of all captures, mortality's, injuries and causal events delineated by species and month/year to date for 2009. This spreadsheet also includes and tracks fresh scrapes occurring on captured turtles and will be helpful in determining the success of the intake pipe cleaning project.
