NRC ESTABLISHES OFFICE OF POLICY PLANNING; NAMES RICHARD H. VOLLMER DIRECTOR The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has established an Office of Policy Planning to provide the NRC with an evaluation of long-range policy issues.

Policy planning by the Office will cover not only the regulatory perspective but will also identify viewpoints of the nuclear industry and public interest groups that the Commission should be aware of in its considerations of long-range policies and plans. In addition, the Office will bring to the Commission's attention any other external factors or conditions that the Commission should be aware of in its considerations.

Richard H. Vollmer has been appointed Director of the Office. He will serve as the principal advisor to the NRC's Executive Director for Operations and the Commission for policy planning in support of the NRC's mission.

Mr. Vollmer, who will be responsible for developing and examining relevant long-range policy issues, will maintain close contact with the NRC staff and management, the Commission, the nuclear industry and public interest groups.

Mr. Vollmer has been Senior Vice President of Tenera, Limited Partnership, an engineering and management consulting firm, since 1987. He formerly served with the NRC as Assistant Director for Site Analysis, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR), from 1975-1978; Assistant Director for Systems and Projects, NRR, 1978-1980; Director, Division of Engineering, NRR, 1980-1985; and Deputy Director, in the Offices of Inspection and Enforcement and NRR, 1985-1987.

He also served with the former Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) from 1972-1975, first as a Project Manager, then as a technical assistant to the Assistant Director for Operating Reactors, and later as Chief of the Quality Assurance Branch.

Before joining AEC/NRC, Mr. Vollmer worked for Atomics International, Allis-Chalmers, and DuPont at the Savannah River

Plant in South Carolina and Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.

Mr. Vollmer received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1952 and did graduate work in nuclear engineering at the University of Wisconsin.
