No: 24-073 September 26, 2024 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Planning Meetings on Implementing ADVANCE Act

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff, as part of its implementation of the ADVANCE Act, will periodically hold public meetings. Information about these meetings can be found on the NRC website, at least 10 days before each meeting.

The ADVANCE Act presents a lot of opportunities for the NRC. Moving forward, our intent is to keep the public and other stakeholders informed while we incorporate the Act into ongoing efforts that enable us to be more efficient, flexible and predictable, said NRC Chair Christopher Hanson. Our core mission remains protecting public health and safety, even as we shift into a faster -paced future.

The Act, signed into law on July 9, 2024, sets requirements for reports and actions covering several aspects of the NRCs activities. The Acts provisions address budgeting, fees charged to advanced reactor applicants and pre-applicants, regulatory requirements for advanced reactors and fusion technology, and recruiting and retaining the agencys workforce. The agencys implementation efforts include the planned public meetings and potential publication of preliminary material such as white papers or draft regulatory guidance to support stakeholder engagement.

These public meetings are absolutely critical to not only effectively implement the requirements Congress set, but also to identify other potential improvements consistent with the spirit of the Act, said Mike King, Special Assistant for the ADVANCE Act in the NRCs Office of the Executive Director for Operations.

The public can submit questions or comments on the ADVANCE Act on the NRC website.
