No: 24-027 April 24, 2024 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Seeks Input on Monticello Subsequent License Renewal Draft Environmental Impact Statement

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public comment on its draft site -specific environmental impact statement - called an EIS - for the application by Northern States Power Company-Minnesota (doing business as Xcel Energy) proposing a second renewal of the license for the Monticello reactor in Monticello, Minnesota.

Northern States is seeking a second, or subsequent, license renewal to extend the plants operations from 60 to 80 years. The license for Monticellos boiling-water reactor expires in September 2030.

The NRC staffs preliminary conclusion in the draft EIS is there are no adverse environmental impacts that would preclude the renewal of Monticellos operating license for another 20 years. The draft EIS is open for comments until June 10.

The NRC staff will hold two public meetings on the draft EIS. The first meeting will be a webinar on May 8, from 1-3 p.m. Central time. The second meeting will be May 15, from 6-8 p.m. Central time in the South Mississippi Room of the Monticello Community Center at 505 Walnut St. in Monticello. The staff will also hold an open house from 5-6 p.m. Central time for informal discussions with the public. At both meetings, the staff will discuss the environmental review process and accept comments on the draft EIS.

Written comments can also be submitted by email to MonticelloEnvironmental@nrc.gov, or electronically at regulations.gov, using Docket ID NRC-2023-0031. Comments also can be submitted by U.S. Mail to Office of Administration, Mail Stop: TWFN A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, ATTN: Program Management, Announcements and Editing Staff.

The Monticello draft EIS will be available at the Monticello Great River Regional Library, 200 W. 6th St. in Monticello. More information about subsequent license renewal is available on the NRC website.
