The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public comment on the draft supplemental environmental impact statement for renewing the operating license of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1, 35 miles northeast of Cleveland, Ohio. The draft report contains the NRC staffs evaluation and preliminary conclusion that no environmental impacts would preclude renewing the license for an additional 20 years of operation.

The NRC staff will hold two virtual public meetings on the draft report. The first meeting will be Oct. 1 from 1-3 p.m. Eastern time, and the second meeting will be Oct. 2 from 6 -8 p.m.

Eastern time. As part of these meetings, the staff will describe the environmental review process and accept comments on the draft report.

The public can also submit comments three other ways: online at regulations.gov, under Docket ID NRC-2023-0136; email to PerryEnvironmental@nrc.gov; or by mail to Office of Administration, Mail Stop TWFN A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001. The deadline for submitting comments is Oct. 21.

The operating license for Perry Unit 1, a boiling-water reactor, expires Nov. 7, 2026. The plant owner, Energy Harbor, submitted the license renewal application on July 3, 2023. The NRCs review of the application covers both safety and environmental issues. The draft report is part of the NRCs environmental review and is available on the NRCs website. A final environmental impact statement is anticipated to be issued in spring 2025.
