A Nuclear Regulatory Commission Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will conduct an oral argument in Rockville, Maryland on May 22, on a petition to hold an adjudicatory hearing concerning Pacific Gas and Electrics application requesting an additional 20 ye ars for the operating licenses of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Units 1 and 2, in Avila Beach, California.

The oral argument will begin at 1 p.m. Eastern time. The oral argument will allow the Board to ask questions regarding the standing of petitioners San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace, Friends of the Earth, and the Environmental Working Group, as well as the admissibility of the petitioners three proposed contentions that challenge safety and environmental aspects of the application. The three administrative judges on the Board will hear argument from counsel for the petitioners, PG&E, and the NRC staff.

The oral argument will be held in the ASLBs Hearing Room at NRC headquarters. It will be open for observation in person, as well as via webcast and a listen-only telephone line.

Those wishing to attend in person must use the NRCs main entrance at 11555 Rockville Pike in Rockville, Maryland, and arrive early to allow time for security screening and escort to the hearing room before the oral argument begins. Visitors must provide a valid government-issued photo ID during the screening process. Signs, banners, displays, or other demonstration materials are prohibited in the Hearing Room.

The Board is composed of three administrative judges from the NRCs Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel. Boards conduct adjudicatory hearings on NRC licensing and enforcement actions, and they are independent of the NRC staff. A Boards rulings may be appealed to the Commission, the five-member body that sets NRC policy.
