No: 24-061 July 26, 2024 CONTACT: David McIntyre, 301-415-8200 NRC Issues Final Environmental Impact Statement for North Anna Nuclear Plant Subsequent License Renewal The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has published its final environmental impact statement for the proposed second license renewal for the North Anna nuclear power plant in Virginia.
The statement, known as an EIS, examines the supplemental environmental report submitted by Virginia Electric and Power Co., a subsidiary of Dominion Energy, as part of its subsequent license renewal application. The NRC staff concludes there are no adverse environmental impacts to preclude the renewal of North Annas operating licenses for an additional 20 years.
Dominion is seeking a second, or subsequent, licensing term to extend the plants operations from 60 to 80 years. The licenses for the North Anna reactors, located 40 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia, currently expire in April 2038 for Unit 1, and in August 2040 for Unit 2.
An Atomic Safety and Licensing Board on July 10 denied a petition for hearing by two groups challenging the staffs environmental review. The staff issued its safety evaluation of the renewal application in January 2022.
The final EIS and other information about the subsequent license renewal review for the North Anna Power Station, Units 1 and 2, are available on the NRC website.
