NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: www.nrc.gov Blog: http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov No.12-091 August 7, 2012 NRC, FEMA SEEK PUBLIC INPUT IN UPDATING EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS GUIDANCE; MEETING AUG. 22 IN KANSAS CITY, MO.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will meet with the public, state/local officials and other interested groups Aug. 22 in Kansas City, Mo., to discuss a proposed update to the agencies guidance for emergency preparedness plans at U.S. nuclear power plants.

Both the NRC and FEMA currently evaluate those plans using a single set of requirements, Criteria for Preparation and Evaluation of Radiological Emergency Response Plans and Preparedness in Support of Nuclear Power Plants. The agencies are starting what is expected to be a multiyear process for revising these criteria to incorporate whats been learned since the guidance was published in 1980.

The meeting will run from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Dept. of Agriculture, 6501 Beacon Drive, in Kansas City. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide comments during the meeting. The meeting will include both a teleconference and Web conference. Anyone interested in calling in or viewing the Web conference should contact Annette Stang at 301-415-2918 or EmergencyPreparedness.Resource@nrc.gov by Aug. 17 for instructions. A similar meeting will be held at NRC Headquarters in Rockville, Md., on Sept. 13.

NOTE: Anyone wishing to take photos or use a camera to record any portion of a NRC meeting should contact the Office of Public Affairs beforehand.
