The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region III titaff (Lisle, Illinois) on this date.

ALERT DECLARED DUE TO LOSS OF OFFSITE POWER At 8:43 p.m.(ET),on June 24, 1998, the plant automatically shut down.

after a tornado damaged the electrical switchyard and cut off the plant's offsite power supply. As a result, the licensee declared an Alert at 9:18 6 p.m. under its emergency plan.

Two of the plant's emergency diesel generators are supplying electrical power to the plant's safety systems. The reactor is in a stable condition, and plant operators are gradually reducing the reactor cooling system temperature. There was no evidence of release of radioactivity  ;

within the plant or to the environment. No injuries were reported at the I site. An NRC special inspection team was dispatched to the plant site to monitor the plant's condition and the licensee's activities. The NRC team is comprised of reactor, electrical and mechanical specialists. Two NRC resident inspectors monitored plant activities through the night. The j team has been supplemented by NRC resident inspectors from other nuclear plants in Ohio and Michigan.

The licensee is assessing the extent of damage to the switchyard and to the three electrical lines which provide power to the plant. The licensee will focus initial repairs on restoring one offsite power source and then work on the other two lines. The licensee will maintain the Alert classification until offsite power is restored to the plant.

The'NRC Region III (Chicago) team will provide round-the-clock coverage of plant activities until power is restored to the plant.

There has been extensive local' media coverage focusing on the storm damage in the county.

The State of Ohio has been notified. The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.

The licensee notified the NRC Operations Center of this event at 9:37 p.m. (ET) on June 24, 1998. This information is current as of 12:00 p.m.
