August 15, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE-This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without ver*1fication or evaluation

INITIAL CRITICALITY i.
Region III (Chicago) was informed by the inspector at the site that the Davis-Besse Unit 1 plant went critical at 1730 hours0.02 days <br />0.481 hours <br />0.00286 weeks <br />6.58265e-4 months <br /> EDT on August 12, 1977.
No significant problems were noted during the approach to criticality which was achieved well within predicted limits. The plant received its operating license on April 22, 1977. During the interim period the plant loaded the fuel assemblies and conducted final equipment checkout.
This PN is being issued because this item is considered to be of 7
j potential public interest.
A Region III (Chicago) inspector was at the site during the approach to criticality.
