SUBJECT:

GENERIC ' PROBLEM 0F CRACKS IN ONE-INCH UF6 CYLINDER VALVES On' Friday, July 24, 1987, the U.S. DOE, Oak Ridge Operations Office, Safety Division, notified NRC of a potential for cracks in one-inch valves used of UF6 cylinders. This type of valve is used on Models 48, 30A and 30B cylinders. The manufacturer of the potentially defective valves is Superior Valve Company. Only lots 17 and 20 (stamped on valves) are known to be involved. A cylinder manufacturer notified DOE that seven of these valves cracked upon installation onto cylinders. Of the 2,202 valves manufactured,1,784 were designated for DOE use and 418 were designated for private sector. DOE has determined that some of the valves are in the possession of NFS, GE, and Allied Chemical. Region III is aware of this matter. DOE considers that any of these valves which are on cylinders which have been filled are probably safe; however, DOE recommends their replacement as a conservative action.

Licensees have.been notified.

The States of- Tennessee and North Carolina have been notified.

This information is current as of 11:30 a.m. (EDT) on July 27.
