GE-HITACHI NUCLEAR ENERGY AMERICAS LLC - RECEIPT OF SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION NEEDED FOR RENEWAL REVIEW OF GE-HITACHI NUCLEAR ENERGY AMERICAS LLC NUCLEAR TEST REACTOR FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NO. R 33 (EPID: L-2020-RNW-0038)

Dear Mr. Martinez:

By letter dated November 19, 2020 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML21053A071), as supplemented by letter(s) dated September 10, 2021, September 22, 2021, December 16, 2021, April 4, 2022, and April 22, 2022 (ML21211A617, ML21265A247, ML22014A420, ML22132A272, and ML22112A236 respectively), GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy Americas LLC submitted a license renewal application (LRA) for renewal of Facility Operating License No. R-33 for its Nuclear Test Reactor. The renewed license would authorize continued operation of the facility for a period of 20 years from the date of issuance of the Renewed Facility Operating License.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff performed an acceptance review of the LRA, including the supplements, and determined that the information is sufficient for the NRC staff to begin its detailed review. Notwithstanding the acceptance review, the NRC staff may require additional information to complete the detailed technical review. If needed, the NRC staff will request this information by separate correspondence within approximately 60 days of the date of this letter.

Based on the acceptance review and discussions by telephone with GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy Americas LLC staff on May 13, 2022, the NRC staff expects to complete its review and make a final determination on the LRA by June 30, 2023. This date could change due to several factors, including requests for additional information, unanticipated changes to the scope of the review, unsolicited supplements to the LRA, and others. If the forecasted date changes, the NRC staff will notify you in writing of the new date and an explanation of the reason for the change.
