  • Immediate reference leg boiling is not expected to occur for short duration excursions into the unsafe region due to heating of the drywell. The thermal time constant associated with the mass of metal and water in the reference leg will prohibit immediate boiling of the reference leg. Reference leg boiling is an obvious phenomenon. Large scale oscillations of all water level instruments associated with the reference leg that is boiling will occur. This occurrence will be obvious and readily observable by the operator.
