Arbitrary Intermediate Pipe Breaks; Retransmittal of Attachment D, Potential for Stress Corrosion Cracking

3. Memo dated March 20, 1984 from J. P. Knight to T. Novak,

Subject:

SSER for Catawba 2 en Arbitrary Intermediate Pipe Breaks The Mechanical Engineering Branch has reviewed the Public Service of New l Hampshire (PSNH) submittal (Ref.1) dealing with alternative pipe break l criteria that would eliminate arbitrary intermediate pipe breaks in all high energy piping systems except the main feedwater system at the Seabrook Station, Unit 1. Our evaluation of the applicant's submittal is attached.  ;

Based on our review of the applicant's technical justification for elimination of arbitrary intermediate breaks given in Attachments A through E to its I submittal, we have concluded that the applicant's request is acceptable. i This approval is applicable to Unit 1 only, since the applicant's submittal (Ref.1) gives details of proposed breaks, etc., to be eliminated for Unit I and not for Unit 2. The applicant's staff has been apprised of this during a telecon between Victor Nerses and Raman Pichumani of the NRC staff and Robert Sweeney on March 5,1985.
