JUN 2 41987 MEMORANDUM FOR: Jaaes A. Deye, Ph.D.

Consultant -

l FROM: Vandy L. Miller, Chief Medical, Academic, and Commercial Use Safety Branch Division of Fuel Cycle, Medical, Academic, and Commercial Use Safety, NMSS

SUBJECT:

NEW MEXICO REQUEST FOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE l l

The Agreement State of New Mexico has requested technical assistance from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or its consultants regarding dose calculations for six brachytherapy patients treated at a New Mexico facility. I From Mr. McElroy's June 22, 1987 telephone conversation with you, I understand that you agreed to help us with this matter. l New Mexico staff provided the enclosed documents that they believe should be sufficient to evaluate the patients' doses and to provide answers to the following specific questions:

1. Is a correct method used for the calculation of estimated doses delivered to the six patients?
2. Are the values correct for the estimated doses delivered to the six .

patients?  !

3. Is any other information needed to answer the above questions?

Although there is no immediate urgency to this matter, New Mexico would like an answer within a few weeks. Also on the matter of timing and scheduling, I believe Mr. McElroy explained that your contract expires on June 30. We have forwarded the appropriate forms through NRC's administrative staff to renew i your contract as of July 1. Unfortunately, until the processing of these documents is completed, we are not able to authorize you to do any work on or after July 1, 1987. Thus, it would be helpful if you could complete your review of the enclosed documents and answer New Mexico's questions before July 1, 1987.

If you have any questions about either the enclosed materials o-administrative matters concerning your contract, please call me ut 427-4002, Mr. McElroy at 427-4108, or Mrs. Vacca at 427-4112.
