Gentlemen: E&R File copy ( M - Comment in the paper would indicate that someone was surprised to find a fault where they were ')uilding a structure near.Bodegaa . Lagoon in California.. Can it be that ANY of your engineers are so uninformed as-not to know that trach of the California coast from Point. Arena, under Port'Ross, Bodega Harbor, Toma)hs Bay (note its ' straight' character),Bolinas Bay ote.,are right.on.and mark the great San Andreas. Rift which is.~a shatter area from ten to thirty or more miles wide and which consti';utes the local part of the greatest fault or adjustment line of.the 9heth. This runs from Graham Land and Cape Horn 'along the west coant of South America, branching in two through the West. Indies and Central America, then branching again across western US but principally passing through CaliforniaEArizona along a line.from. San Bernardino, Elizabeth Lake, Hanford, San Andreas, just. missing the routhwest corner of San Francisco, then Bolinas, Tomales Bay, Bodega Harbor, and on north through Alaska on two branche one --via' the Aleutian Islands.and. one via Cape Prince of Wales, across Asia to Asia Minor, southern Europe to the Cantabrian Mountains of Spain.. The principal branches can be seen on the map going via Japan,. Philippines, Papua and East Austr.tlia, 'also from Tibet via Malay Penn.,' Sumatra and Java. Also from Tur::ey via Palestine, Sinai, Nile Valley, Tanganyika, Nyassa and.Drakensbe:rg Alps. Also this explaines the lowest open surface, Dead Sea. As this is.not a.line but a fracture zone usually over ten miles wide it does not seem surprising that in this zone one would find important faults..It would be most surprising if such were not found there. In building in that zone you should expect to build over faults and take the necessary measures to provide structure for that. I trust that the newritem was wrong in indicating that your engineers were surprised to find major faults where they should we surprised not to find.them.
