-- William h. Bennett, president of the California Public Utilities Commission, announced today that the PUC will petition to intervene at an Atomic Energy Commission hearing on a ' proposal to cons truct a nuclear power plant at '

. San Onofre in Camp Pendleton.

.,... a The hearing.has been set by the AEC for 10 a.m. on Nov.19 in the Santa Ana City Hall.

"It is certain that nuclear power development will have an immens e impact on our society," Bennett. s aid.

"Our. purpose-in intervening ic to make sure that the vital interests of the people of California are fully protected."

Southern California Elison and San DieBo Gas and Electric Companies have jointly applied to construct the $82 million plant--designed to Benerate enough power to supply the"olectrical needs of a city of half a million population.

Construction of the atomic powered plant on a beach site south of San Clemente requires approval by the Public Utilities Commission as well as the Atomic Energy Commission.

The joint application is now pending before the PUC.

Five days of public hea51ngs were held by Commissioner Bennett in San Clemente,and Los Angeles and the request was taken under submission / ast Aug. 29.
