This replies to your letter of September 1,1963, addressed to President Kennedy in which you expressed concern with respect to the proposed construction of a nuclear power reactor at Bodega Day, California.

At the Commission's request, the U. S. Geological Survey has been l
conducting a thorough field study of the geology of Bodega Bay l
since early May. In addition, expert consultants have been re-1 j
tained to assist the AEC Regulatory Staff in evaluating Pacir'.c Gas & Electric Company's application with respect to the seismology
/
of the area and structural design of the proposed plant. Final action on the Pacific Gas & Electric Company application will not be taken until the report by the U. S. Geological Survey has been received and evalusted. Further, a e6nstruction pemit will not i
be issued unless the Commission, following a public hearing and a l
decision by the Atomic Sdety and Licensing Boarti and consideration I
of all factors bearing upon safety is coa.vinced that the facility can be constructed and operated at the proposed location wiu-at undue risk to the health and safety of +hy%
blic.
