You may think me quite remiss for not answering your inquiry earlier, L
but I have been badly tied up with a number of tasks which were l
mostly outside Tokyo.
Therefore, please accept my sincere apology
'for my delay.
l Regarding your inquiry, I also recall that we talked in our conversations about the design and construction experience in Japan of a large and musive structure on a bedrock, such as a high-dam, and about ways of surrorting a massive building. I do not think it is necessary for me to present you any detail of methods in the' treatment of the dam foundation, because the United Staten is one of the most advanced nations in this field and many of bedrock founda-tions of Japanese high-dams have been examined and strengthened as suggested by American or European consultants.
l The type of foundation that would absorb nhocks of and accommo-L date some slippage or differential movement of the ground from an earthquake, as referred to by your letter, has been a subject of earnest discussion and research among our engineers for years after Kanto Earthquake in 1923 I wrote a-few pages of an article about that type of foundation design in " Earthquake - and '41nd-Resistant Structure, Volume No. 26, Advanced Architecture Series" published in 1935, a copy of wnich is enclosed herewith. In the article, I classified that type of foundation by a name of " Isolated Structure",
by wnich I represented those structures not resting directly upon the bedrock but having some " buffers" underneath.
Several different ways of forming such " Buffer" were studied and l
introduced in the past, particularly durinc a decade around 1930, by a number of engineers in the world. Among them were some mecha-nical schemes, such as Spherical Bottom Building introduced by an Italian engineer, Floating Building by an American, Roller Mounted Building by an Italian and Spring Mounted Building, while there was the other type of " Buffer" composed of natural material, such as Cobble-Mound Foundation Scheme introduced by a Diitch engineer.
They are shown schematically by Figure s 2.80, 2.82, ?.83, 2.81 and 2.79 in the enclosed copy of my paper.
