P.O.aad E. N3Wd CUROAU l 24S MARKET STREET SAN FRANCISCO 6. CALIP. TELEPHONE SU 14211 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FGLE REFUTES BODEGA PETITION Pacific Gas and Electric Company has asked the California Public Utilities Commission to turn down the newest in a series of attempts to zeopen public hearings on the Company's proposed Bodega Bay atomic power plant in Sonoma County. An organization opposing the plant petitioned the Commission on March 30 to rescind a certificate of approval granted to M&E in November,1962, and to reopen hearings on the matter. The Company's reply, filed with the CPUC, points out that the California Supreme Court ruled on March 17 that the Commission "after full consideration... found that the location was a safe one." The current petition therefore "is just another attenpt.. to seek review of the basic decision in this case long after it has become final," the M&E reply stated. i The evidence being offered by the petitioning group, the M&E reply charged, " consists almost exclusively of guesses, conjectures, speculations and recitals of factual evidence already in the record." The Company asked the CPUC to deny the group's petition since the issue is before the AEC and "neither the Association or the public interest requires" further hearings by the California Public Utilities Commission. Geological and seismological investigations of the Bodega site have been made l I by M&E and its consultants as well as by Government experts, and all of their reports currently are under study by the AEC technical staff in Washington. The AEC, under Congressional act, has the responsibility for licensing power reactors and ~ maintains a large staff of technical experts to review utility company applications. ,i ie. in full detail'. The AEC has announced that it vill hold public hearings in Santa Rosa on h M&E's application for a construction permit to build the nuclear plant. The } hearing date has not yet been set. $ $ $ 5- ,~ 33g l
