-3 to the proposed construction of a nuclear power reactor at Bodega Bay, California.
1 At the Commission's request, the U. S. Geolostcal Survey, Department of the Interior, has been conducting a thorough field stucty of the goalogy of Bodega Bay ainee early May.. In addition, expert consultants have been retained to' assist the AEC regulatory staff in evaluating Facific Gas & Electric Company's application with respect to the saianology of the area and struct. ural design of the propeeed plant..The Coast and Geodetic j
Survey of the U. S. Department of Commeros also is assisting us i
in our evaluation of the seismologr.
A report dated September 25, 1963 setting forth the results of field work at. the alte through June 6,1963 has been submitted to the Atomic Energy Commission iqr the Department of the Interior.
A copy of an AI,C public announcement enncarning the report is enclosed. You will note that a further. geologLeal report has been requested frcm the Department of the Interior. -
Final action on the Pacific Gas'a Electric Compaar application will not be taken until the additional report requested of the Department of the Interior has been received and evaluated. In addition, a construction posit will soc.be Lassed unless the Commisaica, folloring a public hearing and 's desiston ny the.
Atomic Safety and Lionnaing Board and consideration of all factors bearing upon safety is souvinced that the feellity osa be con.
strusted and operated at the proposed location without undue risk to the health and safety of the public.-

We are confident that these procedures and their provision for public hearing will enabic all interested persons to acquaint thessolves wit.h the details' of Pseific Gas & Electric Company's preposal and util assure thorough consideration of all aspects of the pmposed plant bearing upon the question of whether it can be constructed and operated at the proposed site without undue risk to the health and safety of the public. It is the practice of the'Atantic Energy Commission to hold public
' bearings in the vicinity of the proposed reactor site.
It should be acted, however, that such matters as local soning and the esthetics -of the alte are matters within local and state jurisdiction and are not within the purview of the Atcznic Energ/
Comatssion.
