Dear Mr. President:

m ;.- Although ours is not a political organization, we do echo the o _.j request contained in a letter to you from Mr.. Tom B. Carvey, hi= [ President of the California Democratic Council, wherein he sought y your interest in the matter of an application to the Atomic Energy b 1 Commission by Pacific Gas and Electric Company-for construction ,8 of a nuclear power plant on Bodega Head, Bodega Bay, California. . g. 7 One of the last official actions of our beloved Clair Engle, U.S. Senator, was introduction of a joint resolution (SJ Res. 167) i ri which called for official action and study on this matter. p#- Congressman Don Clausen,1st District - California, has publicly opposed this facility. A host of other state and national repres-Fc entatives and members of both major political parties have gone on ' ( record in opposition to the proposed plant at this site. %p 1 The basis of objections of our organization, and we are represent- ) r j ative of the feelings of the majority of citizens in this area, i.s briefly as follows:

p..

1. P.G. & Ets rash persistence is casting a shadow on the entire _._V, nuclear program in' California. In view of reports of the U. S. Geologic Survey and other expert geologists and seis- . L. t 0 ) nologists indicating geologic and seismic hazards of the L 4 reactor site on Bodega Head; the company's conduct is t___!, irresp'onsible and has caused an awareness of the deficiencies-1 intthe present policies of the A.E.C. T 2. Conservation. A review of the proposed site will show you it is a very choice spot for recreation on the California Coast, and that power lines from the plant would traverse beautiful beach land at Doran Park. Incidentally, the company has stated it can not place the power linec under-j ground since the lines would cross the San Andreas fcult at this location. 3. We are convinced that the lives, health and safety cf "crthe:- Californians (not just in this area, but for many miles distant) would be jeopardized by an atomic plant atop an earthquake fault and within 1000 feet of the San Andreas Fault, the world's most dangerous. iL_._._,,_.__._._._.__-..._,,_.,..,

"Such a procedure, in my opinion, is the only acceptable mcthed by which to arrive at an enlightened decision b'ased on all of the facts," Clausen said in a setter to Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, chairman of the AEC. Clausen said his talks with officials of the AEC and U. S. Ocological Survey indicate that the AEC's Santa Rosa hearings will be held "probably in late August or September." The hearings are being held to determine whether the AEC should grant a permit to Pacific 1 Cas and Electric Co. to construct the power plant. AEC officials said announcement of the hearings would 'be mede af ter it receives a report from U. S. Geological Survey regarding certhquake f aults, mainly the major San Andreas fault, in the immediate vicinity of the proposed atomic power plant location. When this report is completed, the AEC is required to give 30 days notice l ( to the public in, netting the dates of the hearings.
