,dVG 1 1963 Director of Regulation raou : John F. Newell, Chi 1

Site-Environmental B

,IDL&R susJEcr: USGS REPORT ON GEOLOGY OF BODEGA HEAD h

During the course of a telephone conversation with Mr. Clebsch on July 30, 1963 concerning the geohydrological aspects of another project, Mr. Clebsch volunteered the following infor-mation concerning the status of the USGS report on the PG&E Bodega Bay reactor project.

~

1.

The USGS report is presently in the " Interior Department,"

E presumably "under consideration" by the office of Mr. Rettie

['

of the Resources Program Staff and by the Science Advisor's 8

office. In this regard the report was sent by Dr. Baker of

[;

USGS to the " Interior Department" about the first of July for is transmittal by/ the Secretary to the AEC. At that time Mr.

Rettie and the Science Advisor sent the report back to Dr.

Baker with comments that seismic aspects should be considered in addition toithe geologic study performed by the USGS.

2,'

Dr. Baker apparently did not agree with the position taken

"~

by Mr. Rettie and the Science Advisor and transmitted the y

report back to the " Interior. Department" with his comments j

to this effect, where, as indicated above, the report is still under consideration.

3 i Rp; 2.

Apparently Mr. Rettie and the Science Advisor are con-y tinuing to withhold the report and to urge Dr. Baker to j.m include a study and report on the seismology of the Bodega Q

site as a part of the geologic report. To date Dr. Baker has b7 not agreed, although, of course, the USGS undoubtedly would E,

carry out such a study if formally requested by the Secretary.

~

In this respect it was my impression from the conversation that Dr. Baker has insisted that the geologic report should be sent to the AEC without waiting for a study of seismology even if y

M such a study were requested.
