t i -j FOR DMEDIATE RE1 EASE liaM UMNIC AMC MORM 10DEGA DATA Pacific Gas and Electric Company has advised the Atomic Energy Com-mission that substantial safety margins included in the design of vital equip-ment for the Bodega Bay atomic power plant assure it will withstand earthquake activity as great as postulatea by the AEC in a recent series of questions directed to the Company. The AEC, in a letter last month, inquired about PG&E's design con-siderations for certain plant equipment and structures. In its letter the AEC outlined hypothetical earthquake forces at Sodega Head far greater than ever j recorded in California and asked PG&E to shov how its plant design could accom-l modate them. PG&E, in its reply to the AEC today, explained its design criteria, i 1 stating that they "contain substantial margins of safety against failure, and 1 provide for containment and safe plant shutdown in the event of earthquakes" as large as those theoretically posed by the AEC in its letter. The AEC inquiry was the latest of several in whien it has asked PG&E to elaborate on various aspects of the proposed safety design of the Bodega Bay atomic plant. In this manner the AEC secures from a utility, prior to public hearings, the detailed information required for full consideration of the Com-pany's application for a permit to build a nuclear-fueled power plant.  ; NNNNN 9-24-6L l 1
