Prealdent Kennedy and Chairman Sanborg.concerning the nuclear I power reactor proposed for constntetion at Bodega Bay, Californa.a.  !

At the Ccanisaica's request, the U. S. Geological Survey,  !

Department of the Interior, has been conducting a thorough field study of the geology of Bodega Bay since early May. In addition, expert eensultants have been retained to assist the AEC regulatory staff in evaluating Pacific Gas & Electric Ccepany's application with respect to the satanologr of the area and structural dealgn of.the pmposed plant. The Coast and Geodetic Survey of the U. S. Department of Commerce also is assisting us .{

in our evaluation of the seianologr.  ;

A report dated Septesber 25, 1963 setting forth the results of f 11 eld work at the site through June 6,1963 has been submitted

~

to the Atomic Energy Ceamission by ,the Department' of the Interior.

A copy of an AEC public' announcement concerning the report la enclosed. You will note that a further geological report has been requested from the Department of the Interior.

Final action on the Pacific Osa & Electric Compaaty application  !

will not be taken until the additional report requested of the  !

Department of the Interior has been received and evaluated. In addition, a construction permit will not be issued unless the C-t == ion, following a public hearing and a deciate hr the-Atomic Safety and Licensing Board and ocasideration of all factors bearing upon safety is convinood that the facility can be can.

White Washington, D.C. cM (

Sir:

)

It is of frantic concern to a large segment.of the heavily popu-1ated San Francisco area that the powerful " utility" P.G.& E. Co. is j going ahead with its plans to construct an atomic power plant, the largest thus far, within dangerous proximity, namely, Bodega Bay. ,

J Not only is it taking a beautiful area which is designed by nature to be a recreatior.a1 paradise for choked cities, but it threatens the very existence of the people in those cities and outlying towns by being )

. )

close to the fault that caused the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. A l

- number of reputable scientists have concluded there will be one maior earthquake during the life of this plant, to say nothing of minor ones, Why this risk, when other sites are available? Why jeopardize lives i when it is not necessary? What of the radioactive waste matter that will be dumped into the ocean and the atmosphere?

Once this plant is built, the powerful P.G.& E. will never move it, certainly, regardless of what it does to our big dairy industry in Sonoma j i

County, either.

I beseech you, sir, to recommend tihat this plant be put elsewhere.

Respectfully,

,.,' ' % u& -
