~ x To H. L. Price, ~ Director of Regulation DATE: September 26, 1963 FRoM- : Howard K. Shapar, ~ Assistant General Counsel Licensing and compliance r s SUBJEcr: BODM BAY NUCLEAR POW 72 PLANT O' The geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey reported today that the excavation for the proposed Bodega Bay reactor was down to rock in the' southwest quadrant at approximately 160'- ' elevation (160 feet below mean sea level). - Most of the rock is now exposed and there is' good evidence that W fault dis- -? N:n covered in the sediments.at elevation -20' extends into the rock. The mar 1== vertical offset in the sediments was ap-proximately fourteen int'haa and the USGS geologists believe that the relative displacement in the rock Lay be even greater. The extent of the horizontal offset, if any, has not been determined. USGS will continue to watch the excavation as it progresses into the rock and will'give us a further informal report of its f4=14ng=. PG&E is considering digging a trench outside the excavation f and across the fault in an effort to establish whether there-has been any recent movement. USGS geologists seem to feel that such evidence would not be conclusive. y cc: R. Lowenstein Edc.nn Case John Newell j 8709220357 851217 !~, T 9 5 PDR FDIA FIRESTOB5-665 ' PDR : m ,. [- .-l{ y-m ( y
