I I

Dear Mr. Secretary:

4 g

1

~

' y.

I am writing in connection with the pauposed construction of a 1

power' plant on Bodega Esad,' the.latter apresenting the northern A

k peninsula which is directed southerly toesto Tomales Bluff' to form 1

Bodega Bay. In view of the reasons set forth in this letter, I a

believe that the construction of the power plant at this location,-

only 65 miles from h central. Bay Ana, would not be in the long-d

{

zsnge best interests of the people.

I()

My own interest in this project apse in the fonowing way.

l Some years ago I did some ocean (salmon) fishing up there and 4l ti became impressbd with the rugged beauty of Bodega Head.. Secondly, y

the University is plaaain to establisih a Marine Imboratory near h

Bodega Esad and, as a person who might use this facility occasion.

N h

ally, I would prefer the surmundings be maintained in the present state and free fremt inkstrialisation. Finany, I aut sun you are

.. /

~

g avsre that the accessible sections of the Cali'fornia coast are few i

and osr between. In a mumil number of, years, when the population is double the present figun,.I feel;that we win be in a desperate condition if we do not set at once to save what rusains of potential-park lard along the ocast.

1he Pacific Gas and Electric Company has insisted on building-te on Bodega Esad because it is a cheap site from the point of view i

of constmetion costs.' Personany, I would pnfer to pay a little j

mon on my monthly gas and light bill as an alternative to the

.j Q

irnversible commitment of this beautiful granite heaAlanA to d

y commercialization. Accordingly, I prepared the enclosed letter 9

(Enclosure No.1) to the Onlifornia Public Utilities Comusission.

+6 E

This letter was signed by fifty-one persons and sent to the f

k Commission some weeks ago. Since then, a 4tplicate letter has been i

p apa nd and signed by an additional sixty persons. I find it

A number of..very aputable persons in this area an opposed to the building of a power plant on Bodega Esad.. Bd Mannion, a M@

' Mr. S. Udall 2

April 11, 1962 a

Biologist at the University of the heific (Stockton, California), has testified against the building of a power plant at that locality. Also, I have reason to believe that many scientists here at Berkeley, including some of those associated with the proposed Marine Station, are in accord with the sentiments expressed in this letter. Unfortunately,.aany of these people have declined.to act on the gmunds that the cause is l

hopeless. 'Ibe most concise and illumf nating krticle I have yet seen on this subject is "Aton Versus Nature" by liarold Gilliam, San Francisco Chronicle, 'this World Section. February 11, 1962.

t From the entrance to Dorran Beach State krk one can* observe Bodega Esad as a long finger of land stretching out into the ocean.

'g It is not difficult to Laagine how it will look after the 400 foot '

smokestack is in place. In addition, the Caspany plans.to build a trene==tesion line ac mss the beach, and they also' propose to use the fill from the excavation for the construction of a roadway which would destroy valuable tideland. From the viewpoint of anyone concerned with conservation, the'vulgarit;y and rapacity of the engineering proposals an almost beyond comprehension, It appears that the Arusy engineers have already issued a permit

)

for the roadway and, as ihr as the power plant is concerned, it is l

genermily conceded that then is a clear and' pzweent danger that the k,'

Public Utilities Commission will grant a decision favorsble to 1

the Company. I em appealing to you se I feel that this matter emnnat any longer be treated dispassionately and with justice at the j

1 state level. Specifically, I would be very pleased if you couid seek the counsel of knowledgeable scientists and'naturalis'ts, such as i

Oilliam, Kortum and.Hedgepeth, in order to determine if action from j

your department is warranted.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the good work you and your department have done.thes thr in conservation.

4 Sincerely yours, j
