TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS WITH MR. L. D. STRINGER, BUREAU OF COPG4ERCIAL FISHERIES,. DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR, CONCERNING BODEGA LAY ATOMIC PARK As a follow-up to the arrangements in my March 22 memorandum to the files on this subject, I had seversi telephone conversations with Mr. Stringer as follows l

April 3 I called Mr. Stringer to determine the status of the report we have requested from Fish and Wildlife Service concerning the marine aspects of the above project.

Mr.' Stringer said he would get in touch with Dr. Theodore Rice, the Chief of their Research Laboratory at Beaufort, North Carolina, who is preparing.

the report, and let me know.

April 4 I called Mr. Stringer again on this date at which time I asked if there was any word on the report. Mr Stringer had not been able to contact Dr. Rice, but said he would keep trying.

I told Mr. Stringer that we would like very much to have Dr. Rice's preliminary opinions on the subject before our meeting with the ACRS next Thursday and asked if this would be possible within the next day or so.

Further, I told Mr. Stringer that we more than likely would want Dr. Rice to attend the ACRS meeting when the Bodega project la concidered to informally.

discuss his thoughts concerning the technical aspects of.the marine biological 1splications. I said that for planning purposes he should consider this to be a firm request on car part for Dr.. Rice to attend.

Mr. Stringer said he would get in touch with Dr. Rice and call me on the mo,rning of April 5..

Files April 8, 1963 In mid-serning of April 5, I called Mr. Stringer who said that Dr. Rice would have informal comments to him either in writing or by telephone by Monday morning, April 8.

Mr. Stringer said he would advise me by telephone concerning Dr. Rice's comments and if he received the oesments in writing he would also informally give me a copy. He also said that Dr. Rice probably would be able to attend the ACRS meeting.

I advised Mr. Case of this information after lunch. Later Mr. Case asked me to arrange a meeting at H Street with Mr.

Stringer, preferably on Monday forenoon, to discuss the comments they would have at that time. Also Mr. Case asked me to cal 1~

Mr. Stringer and tell him that we would like for.Dr. Rice to attend the ACRS Meeting, which was set for Thursday morning from 10:45 to 12:15, but to abk Dr. Rice to be available at around 9200.

I called Mr. Stringer and made the following arrangements:

1.

On Monday morning I will call Mr. Stringer at 10:30 to ascertain Dr. Rice's preliminary coaunents.

2.

In regard to a meeting on Mendey, Mr. Stringer said he already had meetings scheduled at 9 800 for an hour and then for all aftornoon. He would not make a definite oossaittment for a meeting with me for any' time on Monday, but did state that he might be able to meet with me at H Street about 11:00 or 11:30. We lef t the arrangements open fcr discussion on Monday when I call him at 10:30.

3.

Mr. Stringer told me to consider that the arrangement was firm for Dr. Rice to attend the ACRS meeting on April 11.

il 4.

Ha suggested that Dr. Rice might arrange to meet with us J

sometime Wednesday af tornoon, since transportation availability would require him to arrive on Wednesday anyway in order to be here foi the Thursday ACRS asating. Accordingly, I asked Mr. Stringer to outenge for Dr. Rice to meet with us on Wednesdc.y attornoon.
