1088 Pulton San Francisco 17, California Dear Mr. McChee This replies to your letter of July 23, 1963, addressed to President Eennedy in which you expressed concern with respect to the application by Pacific Oss & Electric Company for a construction permit to construct a nuclear power plant at Bodega Bay. Your particular concern related to the seismology of the proposed site.
At the Commission's request, the U. S. Geological Survey has been conducting a thorough field study of the geology of Sodega Bay since early May. In addition, expert consultants have been retained to assist the AEC Regulatory Staff in evaluating Pacinc Gas & Electric Company's application with respect to the sels-mology of the arwa and structural design of the proposed plant.
Fira1 action on the PacLfie Oss & Electric Company application will not be taken until the report by the U. S. Geological Survey has bec received ani evaluated. Further, a construction permit will not be issued unless the Commission, following a public hearing and a decision by the Atcelo Safety and LLeensing Board and oonalderation of all factors bearing upon safety is convinced that the facility can be constmeted and operated at the proposed location without undue risk to the health and safety of the puhlic.
Enc 1ceed is a pamphlet which describes the procedures relating to the licensing of power resetors by the Atomic Energy Ccamission. The public will be given thirty days notice of the date of the public hearing to be held in Santa Rosa in this matter through a notice p ublished in the Federal Register. In addition, a publie annostacament will be issued.
