Dear Mr. McCone:

I am sure that the A.E.C. is vitally interested in the proposed Pacific Gas and Electria Company installation contemplated at present for Bodega Head in Sonoma County, California. There has been much preliminary discussion of this site in the local press. There has been much concern shown for the potential of atomic waste disposal. But there has also been a consideration that this site is one of the most ideal for the location of a Marine laboratory.

What had not figured in the discussion to date, and one which should receive the closest scrutiny.of the Atomic Energy Commission, is the fact that this site lies e,,

directly athwart the San Andreas fault. This is the same geologic f ault which was responsible for the great San Francisco earthquake.

It is probably the most well defined and knowable geological fault in the world.

It is inconceivable to me that the Atomic Energy Commission would approve the location of such an important installation on such notorious weak spot on the dorth's w rface.

It would be my suggestion that the staff investigate this matter seriously and thoroughly.before any further steps are taken with respect to the Pacific Gas and i

Electric Company application.

It is inconceivable to me that the PG6E would consider such a site after the most preliminary and discursive kind of investigation. This is particularly true because of the presence of so many other sites which would be equally satisfactory from a technical point of view.

Very sincerely, a
