TRANSAMERICA DELAVAL DIESEL GENERATOR BEARING FAILURES Tha licensee reports that TransameriY DMd MsW enerator 9 28 has experienced two failures of main bearing No. 7 during test runs following a tear-down inspection.

TitdC PLQUL'.itC8 The failures occurred after five hours of testing on November 20 and after four minutes on December 5. The No. 7 bearing,was one of five main bearings not specifically inspected during the tear-down inspection!

Following the November failure, the bearings were inspected and found to be satisfactory.

However, minor scratches were observed, and res ring of the No. 7 cast aluminum split-ring bearing had failed at the minimum wall section of the oil inlet groove. Five of seven rings inspected were replaced.

.~.7m an V licensee's initial evaluation believes the cause of the first failure to be inadequately supported bearing. A detailed failure analysis was in progress at the time of the December 5 failure.

The licensee is conducting inspection and evaluation of circumstances associated with this event. Region II will conduct routine followup.

These failures are expected to delay the current scheduled January 15, 1986 fuel load date for Catawba Unit 2.

The licensee and the NRC are prepared to respond to media inquiries.

The State of South Caroline has been informed.

The NRC received initial notification of this event by telephone from the licensee on December 5, 1985.
