/Y UNITED STATES 8' k NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 5 E WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555

%***** SEP 15 1986 Mr. Jack Taylor, Jr.

Special Prcjects/ News Department Dallas Times Herald 1101 Pacific Avenue IN RESPONSE REFER Dallas, TX 75202 TO F01A-86-346

Dear Mr.. Taylor:

This is in partial response to_your letter dated May 6, 1986, in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (F0IA), six categories of records concerning USA and USSR nuclear power reactors.

The 25 records described on the enclosed Appendix A are already available for public inspection and copying at the NRC Public Document Room (PDR) at 1717 H Street NW, Washington, DC 20555.

The 18 records described on the enclosed Appendix B have been made available for public inspection and copying at the PDR in folder F01A-86-346 under your name. Copies of these Appendix B records are also enclosed.

Other records, which relate to the N-Production Reactor at Hanford, Washington, are records under the jurisdiction of the Department of Energy (00E) and they are being referred to the DOE for a disclosure determination and a direct response to you.

For your information, the staff noted that some DOE records have been superseded by DOE's "N Reactor Update Safety Analysis Report" (NUSAR), Volumes 1 through 7, which contains the current description of the N Reactor and accident analyses performed for that facility. (See item 3 listed on Appendix A under "Other Documents"). Please note that these volumes are maintained in PDR retired files; however, they can be retrieved on 48 hours5.555556e-4 days
0.0133 hours
7.936508e-5 weeks
1.8264e-5 months
notice for inspection and copying at the PDR.

-~

The staff has identified Report No. ORNL-5613 " Analysis of the 1957-1958 Soviet Nuclear Accident" (84 pages) by J.R. Trabalka, L.D. Eyman, and S.J. Auerbach, as being subject to your request. This document, published for the Department of Energy, may be purchased from the National Technical Information Service, Department of Commerce, 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, VA 22161 at a cost of $11.95 for a paper copy, or $5.95 for a microfiche copy.

Enclosed is a notice which explains the procedures and charges for obtaining records from the PDR.

Sincerely, MA '
