REQUEST FOR PERMISSION TO TAKE CORE SAMPLES FROM THE BIOLOGICAL SHIELDING - VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE TRAINING REACTOR This is in regard to your May 16, 1986 letter requesting permission to obtain samples from the biological shielding of your reactor to ascertain the amount of above-limit and exempt quantities of reinforced concrete that must be removed.

This information would be used to develop a realistic decommissioning plan.

By this letter, NRC gives you permission to obtain the requisite core samples and to remove only those in-core units that would otherwise interfere with securing the above mentioned samples.
