s7 VIRGINIA TECII Department of tilaLaburg Virginia 24061 IIcalth and Safety (703) % 14775 Docket No.
50-124 May 16, 1986 Mr. Harold Bernard Division of Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 Dear Mr.
Bernard:
With a view to possibly decommissioning our reactor and terminat-ing our operating license R-62, we have issued a request for a
proposal to prepare a decommisssioning plan and to carry out the l
plan, upon approval by the NRC.
Several companies have expressed an interest in responding to the RFP.
If we receive an accept-able proposal within the funde available to us, we will proceed with the pro. ject.
To help in preparation of the decommissioning plan, some of the interested companies have stated that they would wish to make core drills into the concrete shields and structural materials to help ascertain the amount of material which will, exceed the radiation limits established by the NRC.
In order to accommodate the successful bidder, should they wish to take this approach, I wish to formally request that our current license be modified to permit taking these cores prior to initiating the decommissioning proper.
Our bid opening dar,e is May 28, 1986.
Under the terms of the
- RFP, we can negotiate with two of the bidders, chosen at that time as the ones best qualified to perform the work at a suitable
- price, to assure that we get the best performance.
If possible, it would be helpful if at that time we had your response.
However, I realize that this is very short notice.
I Sincerely, b
A. Keith Furr 8605210462 860516 PDR ADOCK 05000124 P
