REACTOR SCRAM DUE TO INCREASED FEEDWATER FLOW At6:52p.m.(EST)onDecember 31, 1987, the reactor scranned from 75; percent power as a result of. high water level in the reactor. The increased water level was caused by a personnel error during the installation of an auxiliary computerA ntended to monitor feedwater heater temperature.- While the computer was being connected to'the main process computer, a lead carrying the feedwater flow data'to the main process

  • computer was-inadvertently grounded (shorted). Although feedwater flow' remained :normai r the control system " sensed" a 50 percent reduction in the flow and increased the) flow' rate into the reactor vessel.

The high reactor water level signal caused a trip of the feedwaterhurbines, followed by a main turbine-generator trip, and the reactor scram. The unit's safety systems functioned normally during the scram, although a post-accident recorder did not switch to high speed, '

-as required, and leakage was observed from a feedwater heater pump seal.-

N The reactor remains shut down for maintenance and routine surveillSece; testing. The m licenseeexpectstorestarttheplantonJanuary5,1988.~,{TheMicensee_iscurrently On December 30, 1987, the;11censee'" requested. Region III,

'v) llinited to 75 percent power.(Chicago) authorization to increase to full power. The request-is under The State of Michigan will be infonned.

'There has been local news media interest in the reactor shutdown.

The Headquarters Operations Center was notified of- the reactor scram'a't%8:12_ p.m. (EST) on December 31, 1987. This information is current as of 12 Noon (EST);' January 4,1988.
