Dear Roger:

Enclosed are materials which were prepared by Haywa$d i Tyler Pump Company ("HTPC") relating to the inspection and investigation of HTPC. As we have stated to you previously, these documents were generated'by ETPC, and we considar them ETPC documents and not in any way Nuclear Regulatory Commission documents. We expect that these documents will be returned to us immediately after your review of them. This range of pu=ps, vnish c=mprises fourteen (14) simas, was named "33". De N3 range of pu=ps is an end sue:ima, ver.1:al:"y spli :=nfiguracima vi.h a can:11ever snaf:/beart=g arrange==== designed for icv stress /deflec:1:n and high beart=g lif e. he fixsc I ?C pumps of this range became available for :esci:3 during.he second quarter of 1373. Sese pu=ps were of sizes 1-1/* x 2 x 7 N3 (3E1) and 2 x 3 x 10 N3 (3H2), :vo of each size, and vers :s be shipped :s :he 3cs:=n Idisen, 7113:i= ; ge= era:1=g facill:7 (Sis analysis is 11=1:ed :s :he 3E1 size.) Se pumps were all h7d:cetac1= ally and ;erfor=ance :es:ed, durisg which vibra:ics and heart =g ta=pera:ure readisgs were :akas and recorded.

Se initial 3E bearing desigs was comprised of a c711sdrical roller radial bearing (NCCS) and a single ;ww deep groeve spli: i=ner race th:ast beari=g (QJ3C8). During assenhly of the 3eston Edison 3E1 pumps, a =usiderable amous: of radial displacement was obsez red at.he impeller. 3 ?C de:arnised tha: this uzcassive displacement was due to isternal clearances at.he anti-frie:isa bearing. Is an effort to remedy this problem, a number of diff eren: beart=g configurations were tascad. (see Hayward Tyler Report dated June *.3,1973, attached). As a direct resul: of these :ests, the heartst desis: is :he los:=u Zdison 331 pumps was changed :s incorperste a single row deep groove ball radial bearing (3Z3' 5208). De :h:ast bear 1:3 (QJ3C3) renaised u= changed frca the original beariss design. I vas recognized that, al. hough.his saw bearing c=shisation was ac=eptable for the c=upera:ively lightly loaded 3cstan Idison 311 pumps (1-1/1 x 2 x 7, which has the least load of all de 3E1 sizes),1: vas unlikaly.ha: such ::eni-sacion was acespeable for :he full range of 311 ; umps, especially :oc for such pisup sizes vi.h higher loads as the 1-1/2 x 3 x 8 or :he 1 x 3 x 8 sizes. Accordingly, the 3escon Edimos pumps were shipped on August 1, 1978, but he hearing '=vestigation regarding the 321 pump range continued caereaf:er. Af:ar the 3eston Idiana pumps had been shipped, addi:1onal ;uans of the tsi:141 3E1 bearing configuration (includi=g some of.he 1-1/* x 3 x $ size) were manu-factured for other contrace.s and became available for :esci=g. To overcome this 1= sufficiency of stiffness, the 351 design was changed to incorporate a double row angular contact bear 1=g as the thrust bearing, the same bearing configuration orige,st 'y incorporated into the 3H2 and BE3 designs. Again, based upon :he relatively light hydraulic load of the Boston Edison 3H1 pumps, HIPC concluded that :hese pumps would operate saciafactorily with the bearing configuration as shipped.
