The QC Inspector shall initial /date by the Weld Filler Material Log entry for which verification is perfonned.
3.2 SURVE!LLANCE INSPECTIONS The following randam inspections shall be performed by the QC Inspector.
The frequency of these inspections shall be detemined by the Quality Control Supervisor or his designee.
3.2.1 FIT UP On a random basis, the QC Inspector shall veri fy the following:
a.
The weld joint surfaces and approximately one inch adjacent to the weld shall be clean and free of moisture, rust, oil, grease, or any type of protective
(
coating. Cleaning may be accuplished by wire brushing, filing, or grinding. Oil and grease should be removed by a stoddard solvent, "Va rs o l ", or approved equal.
b.
Mi sma tch (for butt joints) does not exceed 1/8 inch, c.
The gap between parts shall not exceed 3/16 inch and the weld size (leg length) shall be increased by the amount of separation, d.
For butt welds, root gap is'as specified on fabrication drawing or applicable welding procedure, e.
Tack welds which are to be incorporated into the final weld meet acceptance criteria of Section 3.1.
Defective tacks shall be repaired or removed.
3.2.2 PREh,'sT The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that prehrt is in accordance with the applicable welding procedure.
Preheat should be measured with tempera ture indicating crayons or approved equal.
3.2.3 WELD FILLER MATERIAL VERIFICATION The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that the welder is using electrodes properly issued in accordance with Reference 1-C.

4 3.3 VISUAL INSPECTION i
3.3.1 Fit-up Inspection A fi t-up inspection shall be perfomed for all full penetration welds.-
3.3.2 Final Weld Inspection Af ter completion of welding, the QC Inspector shall verify that the welder has permanently marked the weld with his 10 symbol adjacent to the weld. The welder ID shall be recorded on the IR, or Construction Traveler as applicable.
The QC Inspector shall also inspect the weld for the following:
All welds required by drawing are completed and that no additional welds have been added wi thout approval of the Design Engineer.
(
The following visual weld inspection criteria shall be used when verifying acceptability:
1)
All welds are free from cracks and slag or slag inclusions.
2)
Thorough fusion exists between weld metal and base metal.
3)
All craters shall be filled to the full cross section of the weld.
4)
Welds shall be free from overlap.
5)
Weld undercut shall not exceed 1/32 inch.
6)
Weld profiles shall be in accordance with Figure 1.
7)
The sum of diameters of piping porosity shall not exceed 3/8 inch in any linear inch of wld and shall not exceed 3/4 inch in any 12 inch length of weld.
8)
Area of interest is free of are strikes in accordance with Reference 1.F.

9)
Fillet wela sizes shall be checked with a fillet weld gage (fibremetal or equivalent).
The weld size shown on the drawing shall be the minimum required weld size, except that fillet welds in any single continuous weld shall be pennitted to be 1/16" undersize (without corre: tion) provided that the portion of undersized weld does not exceed 10% of the total weld length.
NOTE:
Welds which do not meet the above size requirements shall be corrected.
If conditions are not correctable, they snall be reported in accordance with Reference 1-E.
The QC Inspector shall verify that unacceptable welds are repaired by removing the weld material as reouired by grinding, machining, chipping, oxygen gouging, or air carbon arc gouging, and the surface thoroughly cleaned prior to rewelding.
NOTE:
The extent of weld rce tal cracks shall be
(
ascertained by cid etching, MT, or other equally positive r?ans.
The weld. metal shall be removed 2 inches beyond the end of the crack before rewelding.
3.4 WELD REPA!R Weld repair shall be perfonned and documented in accordance with Reference 1-1.
3.5 BASE METAL DEFECTS Ba se metal defects shall be reported in accordance with Reference 1-0.
3.6 DOCUMENTATION Results of all inspections required by this instruction shall be documented on an Inspection Report (Reference 1-E, ) or on the applicable operation traveler (Reference 1-H).
Results of inspections required in 3.2 shll be documented in comments section of the IR.
Discrepancies found during inspection which can be corrected in accordance wf th existing construction processes (clean-up and minor rework) shall be reported on an unsatisfactory IR. The IR, the traveler and the support package (drawings, TUGCO OA 4m see l

When the discrepant i
areas have been corrected, the craf t foreman will submit the package to QC for reinspection.
if acceptable, the inspector shall sign and date the traveler, and close the IR in accordance with Reference 1-G.
3.6 NONCONFORMANCES Nonconfoming items which cannot be reworked per nomal construction practices shall be reported in accordance with Reference 1-G.
