on safety-related/non-safety-related structural / miscellaneous steel other than cable tray and conduit supports (which are i
governed by their own procedures).
3.0 INSTRUCTION 3.1 WELDER QUALIFICATION VERIFICATION 8
The QC Inspector shall verify that the welder assigned to perfonn the activity is qualified to the applicable procedure by checking the Welder Qualification Matrix, Reference 1-8.

3.2 SURVEILLANCE INSPECTIONS The following random inspections shall be perforned by the QC Inspector.
The frequency of these inspections shall be determined by the Quality Control Supervisor or his i
designee.
l 3.2.1 FIT UP l
On a random basis, the QC Inspector shall verify the i
following:
a.
The weld joint surfaces and approximately one inch adjacent to the weld shall be clean and free of moisture, rust, oil, grease, cr any type of protective coating. Cleaning may be accomplished by wire brushing, filing, or grinding. Oil and grease should be removed by a stoddard solvent. "Varsol", or approved equal.
l f
b.
Mismatch (for butt joints) does not enceed 1/8 inch,
(
c.
The gap betwetn parts shall not exceed 3/16 inch and l
the weld size (leg length) shall be increased by the i
amount of separation.
d.
For butt welds, root gap is as specified on fabrication drawing.
e.
Tack welds whicn are to be incorporated into the final s
weld meet acceptance criteria of Section 3.3.
Defective tacks shall be repaired or renoved.
3.2.2 PREHEAT The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that preheat is in accordance with the applicable welding procedure. Preheat should be measured with temperature indicating crayons or approved equal, 3.2.3 WELD FILLER MATERIAL VERIFICATION The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that the welder is f
using electrodes properly issued in accordance with Reference 1-C.

3.3.2 Final Weld Inspection After completion of welding, the QC Inspector shaII verify that the welder has stamped the weld with his ID symbol adjacent to the weld.
The welder ID shall be recorded on the IR.
The QC Inspector shall also inspect the weld for the following:
All welds required by drawing are completed and that no '
l additional welds have been added without approval of i
the Design Engineer.
I The following visual weld inspection criteria shall be used
(
when verifying acceptability:
1)
All welds are free fran cracks and $1ag or slag inclusions.
l i
2)
Thorough fusion exists between weld metal and base metal.
3)
All craters shall be filled to the full cross section of the weld.
4)
Welds shall be free from overlap.
+
5)
Weld undercut shall not exceed 1/32 inch.
6)
Weld profiles shall be in accordance wtth Figure 1.
7)
The sum of diameters of piping porosity shall not exceed 3/8 inch in any linear inch of weld and shall not exceed 3/4 inch in any 12 inch length of weld.
8)
Area of interest is free of arc strikes in accordance with Reference 1-F.

9)
Fillet weld sizes shall be checked with a fillet weld gage (fibremetal or equivalent).
The weld size shown on the drawing shall be the minimum required weld size, except that fillet welds in any single continuous weld
}
shall be pemi tted to be 1/16" undersize (without I
1 correction) provided that the portion of undersized i
weld does not exceed 10$ of the total weld length, i
NOTE:
Welds which do not meet the above size require, ents shall be corrected.
If conditions are not correctable, they shall be reported in accordance with Reference 1-G.
I I
The QC Inspector shall verify that unacceptable welds are i
repaired by removing the weld material as required by grinding, machining, chipping, oxygen gouging, or air carbon arc gouging, and the surface thoroughly cleaned prior to rewelding.
l NOTE:
The extent of weld metal cracks shall be t
(
ascertained by acid etching, MT, or other equally I
positive means.
The weld, metal shall be removed l
2 inches beyond the end of the crack before rewelding.
I i
I Results of final visual examination shall be documented in accordance with Reference 1-0 or Reference 1-H as applicable.
i Discrepancies found during inspection which can be corrected in accordance with existing cons'truction processes (clean-up and minor rework) shall be reported on an unsatisfactory I
1R. The IR, the traveler and the support package (drawings, design
- changes, etc.)
shall then be transmitted to construction for rework as needed.
When the discrepant areas have been corrected, the craf t foreman will submit the package to QC for reinspection.
If acceptable, the I
inspector shall sign and date the traveler, and close the IR in accordance with CP-QP-18.0.
{
3.4 WELD REPA!R Weld repair shall be perfomed and documented in accordance i
with Reference 1 E.
