t On a ra nda, ba s i s, the QC Inspector shall ve rify the fol l owing:

a.

The weld joint su rfaces and approximately one inch adjacent to the weld shall be clean and fme of moistu re, rust, oil, grease, or any type of protective coating. Cleaning may be accanplished by wire brushing, filing, or grinding.

Oil and grease shoulo be mmoved l

by a st odda rti s 01 vent, " Va rs 01 ", or approved equal.

b.

Misma tch (for butt joints) does not exceed 1/8 inch.

c.

The gap between parts shall not exceed 3/16 inch and the weld size (leg length) shall be ir. creased by the amount of separation, d.

For butt welds, root gap is as specified on fabrication

(

d rawi ng.

e.

Tack welds which am to be incorporated into the final weld meet acceptance criteria of Section 3.3.

Defective tacks shall be repaired or removed.

3.2.2 PREHEAT The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that preheit i, i, accordance with the applicable welding procedur1.

Se n..

should be measured wi th temperature indicating crayons or approved em,al.

3.2.3 WELD FILLER MATERIAL VERIFICATION i

The QC Inspector shall randanly verify that the welder is using electrodes properly issued in accomance with Reference 1-C.

3.3 FINAL VISUAL INSPECTION Af ter conpletion of welding, the QC Inspector shall verify that the welder has stamped the weld with his 10 symbol adjacent to the weld.

a.

All welds requi red by drawing are conpleted and that no addi tional welds have been addeo without approval of the Design Engineer.

b.

The welds are of.the size requi red by the drawing.

Fillet welds in any single continuous weld shall be pe rmitted to be 1/16" unde rsize wi thout correction l

provided that the undersize weld does not exceed 10 pe rcent of the length of the weld.

Welds shall not exceed the size specified on the drawing by more than i

3/32 inch.

Welds not meeting the size requi rements shall be reworked.

Those which are not reworked shall be reported in accordance with Section 3.8.

c.

Welds a re free of cracks, ove rla p, lack of f us i on,

and su rface porosity.

d.

Welds have required degree of penetration.

(

e.

All c ra te rs a re filled to the full cross section.

f.

Unde rcut shall not exceed 0.01' inch deep when its di recti on is transverse to the primary tensile stress nor more than 1/32 inch in all other situations.

g.

For groove welds, the weld shall be conpleted to a level at least flush with the base metal and shall not be reinforced greater than 1/8 inch.

h.

Fillet weld profiles shall tie either sli;htly concave or convex.

The degree of convexi ty shall not exceed 0.1 times the leg length +.03 inches.

i.

The maximum bead width for a SMA weld, other than a fillet weld, shall not exceed 4 core wire diameters of the electrode being used.

The QC Inspector shall verify that unacceptable welds are repai red by removing the weld mate rial by grinding, machining, chipping, oxygen gouging, or air ca rbon a rc

gouging, and the su rface thoroughly cleaned pri or to rewelding.
