The purpose of this instruction is to provide guides for visual inspection of welds in ac,cordance with Reference 1-A I
on safety-related structural / miscellaneous steel other than I
cable tray and conduit supports (which are governed by their own procedures).
3.0 INSTRUCTION 3.1 WELDER QUALIFICATION VERIFICATION The QC Inspector shall verify that the welder assigned to l
i perfonn the activity is qualified to the applicable procedure by checking the Welder Qualification Ma trix,
Reference 1-8.

3.2 SURVEILLANCE INSPECTIONS The following random inspections shall be perfonned by the QC Inspector.
The frequency of these inspections shall be detennined by the Quality Control Supervisor or his designee.
3.2.1 FIT UP f
On a random basis, the QC Inspector shall verify the following:
l a.
The weld joint surfaces and approximately one inch adjacent to the weld shall be clean and free of I
moisture, rust, oil, grease, or any type of protective,-
coating. Cleaning may be accomplished by wire brushing, filing, or grinding. Oil and grease should be removed by a stoddard solvent, "Varsol", or approved equal.
b.
Mismatch (for butt joints) does not exc.ed 1/8 inch.
c.
The gap between parts shall not exceed 3/16 inch and j
{
the weld size (leg length) shall be increased by the amount of separation.
l d.
For butt welds, root gap is as specified on fabrication
- drawing, e.
Tack welds which are to be incorporated into the final weld meet acceptance criteria of Section 3.3.
Defective tacks shall be repaired or removed.
3.2.2 PREHEAT The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that preheat is in accordance with the applicable welding procedure.
Preheat should be measured with temperature indicating crayons or approved equal.
3.2.3 WELD FILLER PATERIAL VERIFICATION The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that the welder is using electrodes properly issued in accordance with Reference 1-C.

MAR 2 2 1982 3 of 6 3.3 VISUAL INSPECTION 3.3.1 Fit-up Inspection A fit-up inspection shall be performed for all full penetration, partial penetration, and skewed fillet welds.
NOTE:
Pa rtial penetration welds do not include fillet welds.
3.3.2 Final Weld Inspection After completion of welding, the QC Inspector shall verify
{
that the welder has stamped the weld with his ID symbol adjacent to the weld.
The welder ID shall be recorded on the IR.
The QC Inspector shall also inspect the weld for the following:
All welds required by drawing are completed and that no additional welds have, been added without approval of tne Design Engineer.
The following visual weld inspection' criteria shall be used when verifying acceptability:
I.
1)
All welds are free from cracks and slag or slag inclusions.
2)
Thorough fusion exists between weld metal and base metal.
3)
All craters shall be filled to the full cross section of the weld.
i 4)
Welds shall be free from overlap.
l 5)
Weld undercut shall not exceed 1/32 inch.
6)
Weld profiles shall be in accordance with Figure 1.
I 7)
The sum of diameters of piping porosity shall not exceed 3/8 inch in any linear inch of weld and shall j
i not exceed 3/4 inch in any 12 inch length of weld.
8)
Arc strikes in the area of interest shall be ground to a smooth contour and checked to ensure soundness.

Fillet weld sizes shall be checked with a fillet weld gage (fibremetal or equivalent).
The weld size shown on the drawing shall be the minimum required weld size, except that fillet welds in any single continuous weld shall be pennitted to be 1/16" undersize (without correction) provided that the portion of undersized weld does not exceed 107, of the total weld length.
NOTE:
Welds which do not meet the above size l
requirements shall be corrected.
If conditions are not correc table, they shall be reported in accordance with Referen,:e 1-G.
The QC Inspector shall verify that unacceptable welds are f
I repaired by removing the weld material by grinding, machining, chipping, oxygen gouging, or air carbon arc gouging, and the surface thoroughly cleaned prior to rewel di ng.
NOTE:
The extent of weld metal cracks shall be
(
i ascertained by acid etching, MT, or other equally positive means.
The weld roetal shall be removed i
2 inches beyond the end of the crack before rewel ding.
Results of final visual examination shall be recorded on the IR (Reference 1-D, ).
Additionally, the QC Inspector shall mark a "Q" on all joints or parts inspected by him with a Nissen Marker.
I 3.4 WELD REPAIR Weld repair shall be performed and documented in accordance I
with Reference 1-E.
3.5 BASE METAL DEFECTS Base metal defects shall be reported in accordance with Reference 1-F.
3.6 DOCUMENTATION Results of all inspections required by this instruction shall be documented on an Inspection Report (Reference 1-0, i ).
Results of inspections required in 3.2 shall be documented in comments section of the IR.
