1 3.2.1 FIT UP On a random basis, the QC Inspector shall veri fy the following:

l a.

The weld joint surfaces and approximately one inch adjacent to the weld shall be clean and free of moisture, rust, oil, grease, or any type of protective coating. Cleaning may be accomplished by wire brushing, filing, or grinding. Oil and grease should be removed by a stoddard solvent, "Varsol", or approved equal.

I b.

Mismatch (for butt joints) does not exceed 1/8 inch, c.

The gap between parts shall not exceed 3/16 inch and the weld size (leg length) shall be increased by the amount of separation.

d.

For butt welds, root gap is as specified on fabrication drawing.

(

Tack welds which are to be incorporated into the final e.

weld neet acceptance criteria of Section 3.3.

Defective tacks shall be repaired or removed.

3.2.2 PREHEAT The QC Ir,spector shall randomly verify that preheat is in accordance with the applicable welding procedure.

Preheat l

should be measured with temperature indicating crayons or r

approved equal.

3.2.3 WELD FILLER MATERIAL VERIFICATION j

i The QC Inspector shall randomly verify that the welder is using electrodes properly issued in accordance with Reference 1-C.

3.3 FINAL VISUAL INSPECTION After completion of welding, the QC Inspector shall verify that the welder has stamped the weld with his ID symbol adjacent to the weld.

The welder ID shall be recorded on the IR.

The QC Inspector shall also inspect the weld for the following:

I CPSES QI-QP-11.14-3 2

3 of 4 OCT 14 1981 a.

All welds required by drawing are completed and that no additional welds have been added without appro/al of

,l the Design Engineer, b.

The welds are of the size required by the drawing.

Fillet welds in,any single continuous weld shall be permitted to be 1/16" undersize without correction provided that the undersize weld does not exceed 10 percent of the length of the weld.

Welds shall not exceed the size specified on the drawing by inore than 3/32 inch.

Welds not meeting the size requirements shall be reworked.

Those which are not reworked shall be reported in accordance with Section 3.8.

c.

Welds are free of cracks, overlap, lack of fusion,.'

and surface porosity.

d.

Welds have required degree of penetration.

e.

All cra ters are filled to the full cross section.

f.

Undercut shall not exceed 0.01 inch deep when its direction is trailsverse to the " primary tensile stress nor more than 1/32 inch in all other situations.

g.

For groove welds, the weld shall be completed to a level at least flush with the base metal and shall not be reinforced greater than 1/8 inch, h.

Fillet wald profiles shall be either slightly concave or convex.

The degree of ' convexity shall not exceed 0.1 times the leg length +.03 inches.

i.

The maximum bead wir', for a SMA weld, other than a fillet weld, shall not exceed 4 core wire diameters j

of the electrode being used.

The QC Inspector shall verify that unacceptable welds are repaired by removing the weld material by grinding, machining, chipping, oxygen gouging, or air carbon arc

~

gouging, and the surface thoroughly cleaned prior to rewelding.
