l 3.0 INSTRUCTION i'

3.1 WELDER QUALIFICATION VERIFICATION The QC Inspector shall verify that the welder assigned to perfonn the activity is qualified to the a,91icable pr l

ocedure by checking the Welder Quali fication fia trix, Reference 1-8.

3.2 SURVEILLANCE INSPECTIONS The following random inspections shall be perfonned by the QC Inspector. The frequency of thes e in,ections shall be l

detennined by the Quality Control Supervisor or his designee.

3.2.1 FIT UP On a randon basis, the QC Inspector shall verify the following:

a.

The weld joint surfaces and approximately one inch adjacent to the weld shall be Clean and free of moisture, rust, oil, grease, or any type of protective coating. Cleaning may be accm:plished by wire brushing, filing, or grinding. Oil and grease should be mmoved by a stoddaN solvent, "Va rsol", or approved equal.

b.

Mismatch (for butt joints) does not exceed 1/liinch, c.

The gap between parts shall not exceed 3/16 inch and the weld size (leg length) shall be increased by the amount of sepa ration.

d.

For butt welds, root gap is as specified on fabric 3 tion d rawing.

e.

Tack eyelds which '.re to be incorporated into the final

(

weld neet acceptance criteria of Section 3.3.

Defective tacks shall be mpaired or removed.-

3.2.2 PREHEAT The QC Inspector shall randualy verify that preheat is in accordance with the applicable welding procedure. P rehea t should be measured with temperature indicating crayons or approved equal.

I f

3.2.3 WELD FILLER MATERII'. VERIFICATION The QC Inspector shall rando11y verify that the welder is using electrodes properly issued in accordance with Reference l

l 1-C.

I 3.3 FINAL VISUAL INSPECTION l

i Af ter conpletion of welding, the QC Inspector shall verify that the welke has stamped the weld with his ID symbol adjacent to the weld. The welder ID shall be rs:::orded on i

l the IR. The QC Inspector shall also inspect the weld for l

the following:

I a.

All welds requi red by drawing are conpleted and that no additional welds have been added withot spproval of the Design Engineer.

j l

b.

The welds a re of the size requi red by the drawing.

4 Fillet welds in any single :ontinuous weld shall be ruoco c4

1 pernitted to be 1/15" undersize without cormction provided that the undersize weld does not exceed 10 percent of the length of the weld. Welds shall not exceed the size specified on the drawing by nore than 3/32 inch. Welds not meeting the size mqui rements shall be reworked. Those which am not reworked shall be reported in accordance with Section 3.8.

c.

Welds a re free of cracks, overlap, lac'< of fusion, and surface porosity.

d.

Welds have required degree of penetration, e.

All craters are filled to the full cross section.

f.

Undercut shall not exceed 0.01 inch deep when # *S k

direction is transverse to the primary tensile stress nor more than 1/32 inch in all other situations.

]

g.

For groove welds, the weld shall be conpleted to a level at least flush with the base netal and shall not be reinforced greater than 1/8 inch, i

h.

Fillet weld profiles shall be either slightly concave i

or con ex.

The degree of convexity shall not exceed 0.1 tin.?s the leg length +.03 inches.

l i.

The maxir um bead width for a SMA weld, other than a fillet weld, shall not e<ceed 4 core wire diameters of the electrode being used, i

The QC Inspector shall verify that unacceptable welds are repaired by removing the weld material by grinding, nachining, chipping, oxygen gouging, or air carbon arc gouging, and the surface thoroughly cleaned prior to rewel di ng.

~

i NOTE:

The extent of weld metal cracks shall be i

ascertained by acid etching, fit, or other equally positive i

means. The weld metal shall be removed 2 inches beyond the end of the crack before rewelding.

Results of final visual examination shall be mcorded on the IR (Reference 1-0, Attachment 1). Additioqally, the QC i

Inspector shall na r'< i "Q" on all joints or pa rts inspected I

l by him with a Hissen fla rker.
