The information is as initially. received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region II staff in Atlanta, Georgia on this date.

SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 72 HOURS On Saturday, May 15, 1999, with Catawba Unit 2 operating at approximately 9 percent reactor power, indication of a main generator ground fault was received while performing turbine startup in preparation for placing the unit on line. The unit was being restarted from a forced outage which began on May 3, 1999. The fault is suspected to be a ground on the generator rotor. The reactor has been shutdown to facilitate repairs on the main generator.

The licensee is conducting an investigation to determine the actual cause of the ground.

The resident inspectors will continue to monitor the activities associated with the repair to the generator.

The States of South Carolina and North Carolina have been notified.
