FROM:

James G. Partlow, Directer Division of Inspection Programs Office of Inspection and Enforcement

SUBJECT:

NRR ACCOMPANIMENT ON POST-FIRE SAFE SHUTDOWN INSPECTIONS Under the previous NRR organization the Auxiliary Systems and Chemical Engineering Branches provided alternative shutdown and fire protection reviewer technical assistance on the region-based post-fire safe shutdown inspections. This assistance resulted in better focused inspections and facilitated both the j

accurate development and the proper resolution of inspection findings (including when necessary the issuance of new SER's).

J Under the new NRR divisional structure, the regions have recently encountered difficulty in obtaining this valuable support. The efforts of senior regional l

and IE managers have been required to arrange for NRR participation for the January Seabrook and February Duane Arnold safe shutdown inspections. The positive response of senior NRR management has been encouraging.

To facilitate future coordination, we request that you identify to us a point of contact within your division whom regional inspection team leaders may contact to arrange for NRR participation.

For your information, the balance of the FY 1986 inspection schedule is as follows:

March WNP-2, Haddam Neck April Clinton, Ginna, Cooper May Braidwood, Pilgrim June Prairie Island, Beaver Valley 2 July Palisades August Monticello September D. C. Cook Reinspection p[.e r-', M,2vQ n
