NRC STAFF ISSUES ASSESSMENT OF PERFORMANCE AT BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN ALABAMA I
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has issued a !
I Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP) report for the !
Tennessee Valley Authority's Browns Ferry nuclear power plant, I located near Athens, Alabama, which cites superior performance in the areas of Operations and Plant Support and good performance in l the areas of Engineering and Maintenance.
l The NRC assessed performance at Browns Ferry in those l functional areas for a period from March 19, 1995 through September
! 7 of this year.
l In a letter transmitting the report to TVA, Stewart D. !
l Ebneter, administrator of the NRC's Region II office in Atlanta, said the area of Operations at Browns Ferry improved from an assessment of good in the previous SALP to superior in the present report. He attributed this to improvements in corrective actions, implementation of programs, self assessments, control room professionalism and shutdown controls. He also said the plant made an effective transition to dual unit operation when Unit 2 joined l Unit 1 as an operating unit last year. Plant Support continued at l a superior level, while performance in the areas of Maintenance and Engineering were assessed as good.
NRC officials will discuss details of the report with TVA l- managers at a public meeting to be held at the Browns Ferry site at i
10:00 a.m. (cst) on November 5. Members of the public and the press are welcome to attend for purposes of observation, and NRC officials will be available at the meeting's conclusion to answer questions observers may have.
