The purpose of this letter is to respond to your letter, dated May 7,1984, q
addressed to me. In that letter you referred to the April 3,1984 Q
comunication to Mr. Jicha bearing Mr. Cunningham's signature. Our letter

to Mr. Jicha offered assistance in the expeditious evaluation of, and 7
review of license applications for, demonstration projects sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE). We feel that this is a prudent way to interface (1
with the DOE policy of encouraging the use of' byproducts materials.
k Your letter of May 7,1984 states your intention to continue with the h
licensing process for the use of WESF capsules containing cesium chloride

in a medical products irradiator. Any license application submitted to the
?.i, NRC, or an agreement state, will be evaluated on its own merit. Among Q
other things, that evaluation will take into consideration relevant operating N
experience with similar irradiators, including DOE demonstration facilities.

of safety systems and procedures associated with similar operations and g
facilities.
