Update on Cesium Release at Radiation Sterilizer Inc.'s (RSI's)

N-Decatur. Georgia facility (ref. : PND-II-88-40 ff) 2ij DOE informed the licensee by letter dated June 13, 1988, that its Oak Ridge.

Operations Office has agreed.to provide assistance in the form of managing the a

effort to identify and remove the source of the cesium leak at the RSI Decatur, g

Georgia facility, and to clean up the facility.

vt N[9-The Governor of the State of Georgia announced in a news release on June 13 1988, that the source removal and recovery activities will be coordinated by DOE, the State of Georgia and other agencies.

NMSS is preparing-a letter to DOE expressing NRC's appreciation for its timely y

and professional response to this pressing mattar as well as other assistance to the State in assessing and controlling contamination. The letter will also

)j request information which will assist NRC in determining what further steps,-

if any, need to be taken at other licensed facilities, both in the short term l",j and long term, to assure safety, as well as infonnation on how DOE plans to l3 manage the current problem.
