A With regard to our briefing with Victor Stello, EDO this morning, June 10, 1988 he asked for information on the following:

Are there any problems similar to the Decatur irradiator facility being l
y experienced by NRC's two licensed WESF. capsule facilities?

A:
RII is in constant contact with its licensee, Applied Radiant Enera.y Corp.,
1 Lynchburg, VA. The licensee is not experiencing any problems. RII i-inspected the facility February 1988, and is planning another special 1
inspection within in the next 10 days, f
3 RII-is also getting a CAL out to the licensee today 6/10/88. The CAL will i
confirm the licensee's comitment to increase monitoring and to follow specified procedures if elevated Cesium.137 levels are observed.

Region III is also in contact with its licensee, Radiation Sterilizer, G
Inc. Westerville, Ohio. The facility has not experienced any similar-problems.

Region III inspected the facility January 1987, and proposed a $10,000 i?.
civil penalty which has not yet been imposed. As a result of the Decatur, Georgia incident, RIII is planning an inspection for the week of June 13, Q
1988. A CAL is being prepared today to send to the licensee.
