)

A stuck manual test button on the starting air pilot valve of No.1 cylinder caused the pilot valve to remain open. This allowed the starting air to oppose normal engine rotation and resulted in a starting time of 13.9 seconds.

An examination of the test button housing assembly revealed the button to be stuck in the depressed position due to a close fit between it and the housing.

The button and housing were disassembled and cleaned and the button was sanded to reduce its dia=cter, thus allowing free travel within the housing. Repeated test operations of the button verified its normal operation. The remaining starting air pilot valve test buttons on the engine were inspected and no prob-lems were f.'ound.

The diesel was then satisfactorily tested with a starting j

time of 8.2 seconds. As there is no' past history of similar events involving this component, this is considered an isolated event with no further corrective action required.
