  • 1.1., _,o11imoro1r " ' - " ri"IJl*"1>>a ry~mn line<J 1111 On August 29, 19a4, a.turtle was found impinged*on the trash bars in the Circulating Water System (CWS) intake. The v. J. Schuler Associates' biologist on stati~n was immediately informed of the incident. The turtle was identified as an Atlantic (Kemp's) ridley turtle (Lepidochelys Kempi). The specimen had a carapace length and width of 323 and 203 mm, respectively, and was live and in excellent condition. The-specimen was released at Sunken Ship Cove, on ebb tide, by the v. J. Schuler Associates' biologist.and was observed ,to swim away vigorously. The appropriate U.S. Govern-ment and-State agencies wer~ notified. Sea turtles are a summer migrant, *common* to the Salem Plant's waterfront during July through September. Past experience indicates that healthy turtles are usually able to avoid the approach velocities of the CWS intake, although occasionally one will become impinged on the trash bars.

Since this event might be interpreted as an unusual or important event having potential public interest concerning environmental impact.from plant operation, this report is submitted in accordance with Salem Environmental Technical Specification, Section 5.6.2.1 (Non-Routine Environmental Operating Reports) *

LICENSEE 'ENT REPORT CLER) TEXT co&ATION Salem Generating Station DOCKET NUMBER LER NUMBER PAGE Unit 1 05000272 84-019""."00 3 OF 3 APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE:

Sea turtles are a-s~er migrant, common to the Delaware Bay. Small numbers typically occur in the lower Delaware River near Salem during July through September. Past experience indicates that healthy turtles are usually able to avoid the approach velocities of the ovs intake, although occasionally one will become impinged on the trash bars.

  • ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE:

The cws intake is monitored for the aGcumulation of debris, which is periodically removed and returned to the river.* Aey turtles which -.

. are observed impinged against the trash bars are immediately removed. Between 1979 and 1984, a total of eighteen (18) sea turtles have been cx:>llected in or around the immediate vicinity of the plant. bf these, thirty-three percent (33%), or six (6) turtles have been ridleys. The*remaining sixty-seven percent (67%), or twelve (12) turtle-s, have been of the Atlantic loggerhead species CCaretta caretta). Of the total turtles collected, sixty-one percent (61%), or eleven C11) turles, have been dead on arrival.

Salem* Environmental Technical Specification,* Section 5 .6 .2 .1 (Non-Routine Environmental Operating Reports), requires that "A report be submitted in the event that *** an unusual or important event occurs that *** has high public or potential public interest concerning environmental impact from plant operation. n PSE&G feels that, based on past experience, this event might.be interpreted as requiring reporting under the specification.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

As previously stated, the turtle was retrieved from the Circulating Water System intake arid released unharmed. The proper notifications were made. *No further corrective action was deemed necessary.
